For businesses, research groups and developers

The place decides whether what you build works.

Whether you deliver a health service, research a treatment or build a business in a rural community: what you build meets a place with conditions of its own. The knowledge about that place is public, but it is spread across hundreds of documents. SustainBridge brings it out for every Norwegian municipality, in plain language, with sources you can check.

The tool is built for Norwegian municipalities, and every one of them is loaded. The municipality does not own the place alone — and the material it governs by is just as available to you.

Context

Same measure, different outcome

A course of treatment, a service offering or a business idea does not work the same way everywhere. Distances, meeting places, living conditions, the labour market, cultural life and emergency preparedness differ from place to place, and those differences often explain more of the result than the measure itself.

So context is not noise. It is a variable — and it can be described, the same way for every place, with sources that hold up to scrutiny. That description is what SustainBridge gives you.

Three starting points

Three ways to use it

Three who set out to create change, activity or belonging in a place — and who put their own questions to the same body of material.

The business and the entrepreneur

Whether you deliver a service or build a business, the place decides whether it holds. For the health service it is distances and transport, meeting places and activities, housing and work, and what the municipality already has. For the business in a rural community it is natural resources, cultural heritage, preparedness and the local economy — each of which rarely carries on its own, but which together can. You get both out in one place, with sources, so the connection can be tested before anyone invests. If you are establishing yourself in a new municipality, you have the material before the first meeting — not three weeks after.

The research group

A treatment is always tested in a context, and the context is usually described in one sentence in the methods chapter. Take obesity: predisposition and lifestyle explain part of it, but the effect of a programme also depends on distances, meeting places, activities, the route to school and living conditions where the patient lives. Here you get that context described the same way for every single Norwegian municipality, with sources — so you can choose comparable study sites, describe the context before the study, explain variation afterwards, and build a consortium with municipalities and businesses around the same description.

Property development and stewardship

An area is to be developed or managed, and the municipality and the developer need the same answer: what affects this area, what is actually possible here, and what the potential is. Adopted plans, land use, conservation interests, living conditions, infrastructure and priorities sit in separate documents and with separate parties. Together they show the room for action — before it is locked into a project or a tender document.

Partnership

Culture, sustainability and preparedness — with Foreningen Norsk Bærekraftsenter

With Norsk Bærekraftsenter we work in particular on the link between social culture, social sustainability and preparedness — how a local community holds together, and what it can withstand when something happens.

Practice in local projects

Students and volunteers work on concrete projects in a place, using the same knowledge base as the municipality and the businesses. What is learned in a project stays behind in the place.

Social culture, sustainability and preparedness

Three things that are rarely examined together, but that belong together in practice: the meeting places, the trust between people, and the ability to turn up for one another when something happens.

Access for research, students and the voluntary sector

Research groups, students and non-profit organisations can be given free access for specific projects that contribute to sustainable development. Send a request to Norsk Bærekraftsenter at post@norskbarekraftsenter.no — say who you are, what you work on, and how access would help you succeed. Each request is considered on its own merits.

Extendable

New data streams when the task calls for it

The body of material is not a fixed package. If you need something more specialised — your own domain data, a portal, a register, an API at a partner — it is connected in the same structure, with the same requirements for source and traceability.

Internal sources

Your own registers, portals and document archives can be connected where the task calls for it, by local agreement. None of it is assumed to get started: the knowledge base is loaded from day one, with no setup and no start-up cost.

External sources

Government registers, statistics APIs, specialist portals and data from partners.

The same rules for all of them

A new stream is handled like the rest of the material: a defined extract, a source on every statement, and a status you can see.

A specialised task therefore does not require a new system. It requires a new stream in what is already there.

The boundary

Everyone works from what is public

Public material onlyThe platform gives access to the municipality’s public knowledge base — not to anyone else’s internal documents, and not to the municipality’s casework in progress.
No shortcut into a procurementA business who uses the tool before a tender reads the same thing anyone else can read. The tool gives no access the municipality does not know about.
The judgement still rests with the municipalityIt is the municipality that sets priorities and makes decisions. Better-informed collaboration does not change who decides.

Who we are

Safe, effective and affordable

Our leadership team combines long experience in sustainability and municipal governance, deep expertise in data, analysis and evaluation, and technical experience from tech start-ups. Beneath the platform lie more than ten years of research and method development — most of it built together with Norwegian municipalities, and tested there.
